Battle Distinguished Cancer Research Award in recognition of exceptional cancer research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The award was created in 2007 by the Battle Foundation of Rocky Mount, a foundation established in 1946 by Hyman L. Dr. Ting earned her PhD at Northwestern University in 1979 and carried out postdoctoral research at the University of Southern California and at Duke University. She joined the UNC faculty in 1984 as an Assistant Professor and rose rapidly through the ranks, becoming a full professor in 1993. She has published nearly 300 research articles, and her work is funded by numerous research grants, primarily from the NIH, including a prestigious Merit Award and two U19s from the NIAID. She is also leader of one of the nine programs on the Cancer Center Core Support Grant and is PI of a training grant for pre-doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows in Immunology. She is a highly sought after speaker at national and international conferences. She has served on numerous grant review panels, advisory boards, and NIH Councils and she is also a member of the Council of the American Association of Immunologists. Among her many honors are her selection as the Berryhill Lecturer in 2010, the University Award for the Advancement of Women and the American Association of Immunologists Life Technologies Meritorious Award in 2013, the NIH Director’s Lecturer in 2014, and election to the Academia Sinica Taiwan and the Henry Kunkel Society in 2015.
In the award letter, Blossom Damania, PhD, Vice Dean for Research, states “this award recognizes the significant contributions you have made over the course of your career to the understanding of the fields of inflammation and immunity”. Fernando Pardo Manuel de Villena, PhD, Interim Chair of the Department of Genetics, emphasizes that Dr. Ting has “been a key member of the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center since she first joined the faculty at UNC in 1984. The high quality and significance of her research is clearly recognized by the national and international community of immunologists. Its translational relevance to cancer is becoming more and more obvious”.
Congratulations to Dr. Jenny PY Ting for this outstanding recognition!
