Dr. Jeremy Wang (Assistant Professor) was awarded a Faculty Research Support “Pivot” Grant from the Department of Genetics for his project focused on demonstrating efficient whole-genome Nanopore sequencing and assembly of Monkeypox virus (MPXV) genomes from clinical samples testing positive at UNC Medical Center’s Clinical Molecular Microbiology Lab (directed by Dr. Melissa Miller).
Genomic data generated will be made publicly available to support global genomic epidemiology of MPXV. This effort is an expansion of Dr. Wang’s current work in SARS-CoV-2 genomic surveillance.
