The article by Jim Evans discusses the importance of the involvement of knowledgeable health care providers in communicating complex genomic information to patients and research subjects.
Jim Evans has published a Viewpoint article in JAMA, with coauthors Amy L. McGuire, JD, PhD, and Laurence B. McCullough, PhD, at the Baylor College of Medicine, on “The Indispensable Role of Professional Judgment in Genomic Medicine.” The article expresses the opinion that, although patient autonomy is important, the involvement of a knowledgeable health care provider should be required in communication of complex genomic information and in making recommendations for management in light of that information, whether the person being tested is a research subject or a patient.
The article was published in JAMA, April 10, 2013—Vol 309, No. 14, pp 1465-66.
