Dr. Karen Mohlke (Professor, Department of Genetics) was successful in renewing her R01 grant for the second time. The ongoing project, titled “Targeted Genetic Analysis of T2D and Quantitative Traits” is funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) and is entering year 14. The overall goal of the project is to identify the functional variants, target genes, and mechanisms responsible for type 2 diabetes (T2D) and diabetes-related quantitative trait (QT) association signals. They have identified hundreds of novel loci for T2D to date. During this phase, the team will study the two key and complementary aspects of T2D pathogenesis, insulin resistance and insulin secretion, by focusing on association signals that affect gene regulation in the liver, and signals that act through insulin processing to affect secretion
