Rachel DuMez, a graduate student in the Curriculum in Genetics and Molecular Biology, won the Peoples’ Choice Award for her research of the health benefits of popular style of drink known as kombucha.

Dr. Hyejung Won (Assistant Professor, Genetics) was selected as the recipient of a Jefferson-Pilot Fellowship in Academic Medicine, which recognizes exceptional junior faculty in the UNC School of Medicine.

Yuliya Pylayeva-Gupta, PhD (Associate Professor, Genetics) has been awarded a Phillip and Ruth Hettleman Prize for Artistic and Scholarly Achievement, recognizing her groundbreaking and innovate research and future career promise.

Dr. Yun Li’s laboratory has published a new manuscript titled “MagicalRsq: Machine-learning-based genotype imputation quality calibration” in the American Journal of Human Genetics. 

Piotr Mieczkowski, PhD has been promoted to Professor in the Department of Genetics, effective August 2022.

Dr. Jeremy Wang (Assistant Professor) was awarded a Faculty Research Support “Pivot” Grant from the Department of Genetics for his project focused on demonstrating efficient whole-genome Nanopore sequencing and assembly of Monkeypox virus (MPXV) genomes from clinical samples testing positive at UNC Medical Center’s Clinical Molecular Microbiology Lab (directed by Dr. Melissa Miller).
