Hannah Siburt, AuD, PhD, has been named Director of the Department of Health Sciences AHEC Contract, effective August 1, 2023.
Dr. Siburt joined the Department of Health Sciences in 2017 and has rapidly moved through the ranks serving as Assistant Professor, Audiology Clinical Education Coordinator, Audiology Program Coordinator, and currently Associate Professor and the Director of the Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences. Her main areas of clinical and research interests include diagnosis and intervention for children who are deaf or hard of hearing, including those with co-occurring conditions, audiologic rehabilitation, and graduate clinical education.
As Director of the AHEC contract, Dr. Siburt will be responsible for working with AHEC leadership along with Department of Health Sciences faculty and students to address the AHEC mission, “to provide and support educational activities and services with the focus on primary care in rural communities and those with less access to resources to recruit, train, and retain the workforce needed to create a healthy North Carolina.”
“I am excited to continue leading our department’s collaboration with NC AHEC,” said Siburt. “My interest in rural healthcare is rooted in my childhood, growing up in rural Virginia. There are so many opportunities to expand our department’s engagement with the AHEC mission including student training and continuing professional development, and I look forward to working together with colleagues across our department and the state to continue advancing healthcare services across North Carolina.”
Dr. Siburt has been actively involved in clinical rural outreach, student placements in rural communities, and service-learning trips to rural regions of the state during her time in the Department of Health Sciences. In her new role she will continue the positive work of the department on the part of AHEC and will work to advance how the department facilitates the larger AHEC mission across the state.
