Department of Health Sciences’ Recruitment Efforts
The department works with individuals within and outside of the university to coordinate our recruitment efforts. One initiative that we take great pride in is the Health Affairs Partnership Pipeline Initiative (HAPPI) which is funded by the NC AHEC statewide grant. This enables us to work with our campus health affairs partners to introduce students at all levels to the myriad of health career options available for them to explore. This collaborative effort enables us to share resources and organize several events for students allowing all partners to participate. We have worked with McNair scholars, Carolina Advising Corp, UNC-CH Summer Bridge students on a consistent basis each summer for the past five years. Other groups have been exposed to various health careers over the years. These events are planned and organized annually in conjunction with Health Science (HS) faculty and students under the DHS Diversity and Inclusion Leadership Team.
Middle School
We partner with various AHEC regional centers as well as the UNC-CH CHEOP office as requested to host students or provide allied health information and demonstrations for them to consider a future career.
High School
Statewide high schools, Wake AHEC, and UNC-CH Project Uplift occasionally contact the DHS to host a group of students for experiential learning opportunities. DAHS students and faculty participate in organizing these events for students to experience working in various labs, understanding ways to communicate with individuals with limited communication skills and other aspects of our work.
Community College
Our department took a leadership role at the spring 2017 NC Diversity Conference to engage community college students in a panel discussion and speed dating opportunity to explore career options after the two-year experience at the community college level in NC.
College
We partner with the UNC-CH CHEOP office to host the Science Enrichment Preparatory Program Scholars (SEP) each summer to gain a deeper understanding of the DAHS disciplines. Select students in our programs share information and experiences with the scholars and provide additional experiences as requested to give them a glimpse of the various career options. In addition, colleges contact us to host students with an expressed interest in some of our graduate professional programs.
Post-Baccalaureate
We welcome opportunities to engage with career changers and alumni of our programs to consider furthering their careers to pursue advanced degrees particularly in physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech-language pathology.
