The UNC School of Medicine’s Department of Health Sciences and UNC OS/OT division is pleased to partner with Novant Health to explore and expand partnerships with New Hanover Regional Medical Center, UNC-W and Cape Fear Community College. The outstanding providers in the Wilmington area support clinical and fieldwork education to increase engagement and visibility about the region. Located approximately 2.5 hours from Chapel Hill, Wilmington has much to offer for students looking to venture outside of the triangle area. This is a unique opportunity to serve the health and well-being of people in southeastern North Carolina and surrounding communities.

The UNC MSOT program is pleased to partner with Novant to broaden access to occupational therapy (OT) services in Southeast North Carolina. As part of the partnership, UNC MSOT students have the opportunity to complete a level 2 fieldwork in the area. UNC MSOT class of 2024 student, Hans Erikson, completed a rotation in this unique setting in Wilmington, North Carolina. Hans worked at the Novant Health New Hanover Rehabilitation Hospital which serves patients receiving services for a wide variety of diagnoses such as stroke, brain injury, and spinal cord injury. The robust rehabilitation facility includes a full kitchen, a simulated grocery store, a “beach” with outdoor activities (corn hole, ladder toss, etc.), a working laundry room, a car to practice transfers, and a plethora of exercise equipment. Hans describes how much he has learned and enjoys the “challenge to continually come up with new ideas tailored to each patient”.
