Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)

CAPS is the primary mental health service for all UNC students, including those at the School of Medicine. CAPS provides confidential, inclusive, and accessible mental health support through individual therapy, group sessions, same-day walk-ins, referrals, and crisis care. Their team of licensed professionals is experienced in working with students in high-stress environments and can support you with concerns like anxiety, depression, burnout, identity exploration, and more. You don’t have to face challenges alone. CAPS is here to help you navigate them with care and expertise.

Taking Care of Our Own Program

Taking Care of Our Own is a mental health and wellness program designed specifically for UNC physicians-in-training. This initiative offers confidential, free-of-charge mental health services provided by clinicians who understand the unique pressures of medical education and training. Services include therapy, medication management, and support for managing stress, burnout, and life transitions. The program underscores our belief that prioritizing your mental health is essential to your long-term success and well-being.

Larry Keith Advisory Colleges

The Advisory Colleges program connects each student with a dedicated faculty advisor who serves as a mentor throughout your medical school journey. These physician advisors offer personalized support on academic decisions, career exploration, wellness, and navigating the hidden curriculum of medicine. Rooted in long-term relationships and community, the Advisory Colleges foster a sense of connection and belonging while ensuring that every student has a trusted mentor to turn to.

Through workshops, one-on-one consultations, and peer tutoring, the office helps you study smarter, not just harder, and become a more effective, confident learner.

Disability Services and Accommodations

UNC School of Medicine is committed to creating an inclusive learning environment for all students. If you are a student with a disability or chronic condition, we will support you in navigating the accommodations process and ensuring your needs are met in both classroom and clinical settings. We partner with the University Compliance Office who determines reasonable accommodations, and we are here to help you every step of the way in implementing them respectfully and effectively.

Career Development at Carolina

Career Development at Carolina supports you in exploring specialties, setting professional goals, and preparing for residency. Through personalized advising, workshops, and specialty-specific resources, our Career Goal Advisors and faculty mentors help you navigate the complex path toward your ideal medical career. If you experience or witness mistreatment, harassment, or behavior that undermines a supportive learning space, you can report it through this confidential form. Every report is reviewed and taken seriously, and your voice matters. We are committed to accountability and fostering a climate where every student can thrive without fear of bias or mistreatment.

UNC Ombuds Office

The Ombuds Office is a confidential, impartial, and independent resource available to all members of the UNC community, including medical students. If you encounter a conflict, have a concern, or need a sounding board to talk through a challenging situation, the Ombuds Office can help. They don’t take sides or make decisions, but they will listen, offer guidance, and help you identify options for moving forward.
