Dr. John Batsis Discusses Sarcopenic Obesity at ADA Annual Meeting
John Batsis, MD

At the American Diabetes Association 85th Annual Scientific Sessions on June 21, Dr. John Batsis presented a session entitled Obesity Sarcopenia—Implications for Weight Loss Therapies. According to Dr. Batsis, “Obesity has been known as a great public health concern for the last five decades. I realized about 15–20 years ago that no one was evaluating this [sarcopenic obesity] epidemic in older adults and how it was affecting their function and quality of life.”

In this talk, he discussed the challenges in identifying sarcopenic obesity. Dr. Batsis also highlighted relevant data on its occurrence with weight loss among older adults. He also discussed the evolution of obesity treatment (both in patients with and without diabetes) and the importance of targeting the correct interventions to the correct patients.
