Jennifer Maguire, MD, assistant professor of medicine in the division of pulmonary diseases and critical care medicine, has been appointed Director of the Critical Care Selective, a required course for every medical student in their final year of undergraduate medical education. Sofia Aliaga, MD, who previously held the appointment, is the newly named Director of Simulation, Experiential Learning and Training (SET) and Director of Interprofessional Education and Practice for the School of Medicine.
Maguire attended medical school at the University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Medicine followed by residency at Mayo Graduate School of Medical Education and fellowship in Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care at UNC. She has been a member of the UNC community for over ten years, and serves in leadership roles as the Associate Division Chief of Inpatient Services for the Division of Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care Medicine and the Medical Director of the Intensive Care Unit at UNC Hillsborough Hospital. She has extensive clinical experience in critical care coupled with a passion for increasing learner confidence in the Intensive Care Unit. She also brings years of experience across the spectrum of medical education, co-directing the Respiratory Block for first-year students, leading the medical intensive care unit rotation at UNC Medical Center for fourth-year students, and serving as associate program director for the Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship.
Maguire’s leadership has been instrumental in maintaining strong student experiences in critical care medicine with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and she is eager to trial innovations to maintain a strong foundational education in critical care, foster a sense of community among learners across the state, and address growing pressures on capacity for medical student clinical education.
