Applying to Our Program
Thank you for your interest in a PGY1 position with the OBGYN Residency Program in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of North Carolina. Each year, our department receives approximately 1,000 applications. We offer roughly 70 interviews for the seven PGY1 positions in our program.
Our program does not mail out information about our program, we hope that in exploring our website many of your questions will be addressed.

UNC Specific Application Instructions:
- UNC follows all national recommended guidance on interview processes and timelines (https://www.acog.org/education-and-events/creog/transition-to-residency)
- UNC will be using Residency CAS, the new Centralized Application System
- Your Dean’s office will inform you of the necessary steps and provide you with the information to prepare your application.
- Submission deadline is September 25, 2024.
- Three letters of recommendation are required in addition to the Medical Student Performance Evaluations (MSPE), also known as the Dean’s letter
- One of these letters should be from the OB-GYN Chair or designee from your medical school. The Chair’s letter can be a SLOE or traditional letter. The updated 2024-2025 SLOE template and applicable resources can be found at https://apgo.org/page/rrrapplicant
UNC Application Review:
- Once we have received your completed Residency CAS file, your application will receive careful consideration regarding an interview invitation.
- We have no minimum USMLE score requirements or grade requirements though more robust scores and grades do strengthen an application in a very competitive pool.
- The Selection Committee performs a holistic review of completed applications submitted through Residency CAS by the submission deadline of September 25, 2024.
We will follow the recommended standards for the Obstetrics and Gynecology residency application and virtual interview processes as detailed by ACOG.
- Application deadline of September 25, 2024
- Interview offers released on October 29, 2024
- Interview offers limited to the number of interview spots
- Applicants have a minimum of 48 hours to respond to interview offers
- Interviews occur no earlier than November 1, 2024
- Notification to applicants of final status (e.g. waitlist, rejection) no later than November 27, 2024
- Virtual interviews for all applicants
- Our program will again participate Program Signaling. Each applicant may choose to send a total of 18 signals with their application (3 gold signals for programs of highest interest and 15 silver signals for programs oh high interest)
- Our Program will participate in the Alignment Check Index (ACI) Program through the AMA FREIDA.
- Applicants will be able to enter certain information about their background, experiences and academics and receive a list of programs that may align with the programs’ recruiting priorities.
