Dr. Basch is a medical oncologist specializing in the treatment of men with prostate cancer. He has led and participated in many of the national guidelines on the treatment of prostate cancer. He leads a research program focused on improving the patient-centeredness and quality of cancer care and oncology drug development. He has developed tools with the National Cancer Institute that are widely used for collecting symptom information directly from patients. His research demonstrated that electronic symptom monitoring during cancer treatment improves patients’ quality of life, reduces hospitalizations, and lengthens survival. He serves on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), on the Editorial Board of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), and previously completed terms on the Board of Scientific Advisors of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the Methodology Committee of the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), the Board of Directors of the International Society for Quality of Life Research (ISOQOL), and the NCI Steering Committee for Cancer Care Delivery Research.
