I am a board-certified internist and rheumatologist with a Master’s in Clinical Research in Epidemiology. I am clinically active, with a panel of general rheumatology patients, musculoskeletal ultrasound clinic, and inpatient consultation, and am involved in clinical training and research mentoring of students, residents, and fellows. My research is focused on osteoarthritis, including imaging, bone shape, body burden, biomarkers, sex and race differences and disparities, and application of novel methodologies in a rigorous and unbiased way. I have been co-PI of the Johnston County Osteoarthritis Project (JoCoOA) since 2017 and the Johnston County Health Study (JoCoHS) since its inception in 2019. In addition to co-directing these two large cohort studies, I also lead the Phenotyping and Precision Medicine Resource Core of the NIAMS-funded UNC Core Center for Clinical Research (CCCR). My research has been well-funded over the years, including from NIAMS (K23, R01, R21), the CDC (U01) and the Rheumatology Research Foundation (RRF). I have also been recognized with the American College of Rheumatology Distinguished Fellow Award (2009) and most recently the Henry Kunkel Early Career Investigator Award (2021).
