Research focus is on clinical applications of mindfulness for stress, chronic pain, anxiety, memory, and other stress-related conditions. I currently lead projects related to mindfulness for chronic pain, stress, substance-abuse, caregiver support, and anxiety. I have led projects on mindfulness for irritable bowel syndrome, mindfulness for pre-diabetes in African Americans, and mindful self-compassion for adolescents. I would be very interested in collaborations with other faculty on use of mindfulness in various clinical and community populations and conditions, in order to enhance health and wellbeing. I have collaborated on projects focused on African American populations, rural populations, adolescents, young adults, and older people. Other topics of interest include education in complementary and alternative medicine, integrative medicine, integrative health care, nutrition interventions, mind-body medicine, mindful self-compassion, mindful communication, functional medicine, holistic approaches to care, implementation of complementary and integrative approaches into healthcare systems, health coaching, wellness, the role of health beliefs in care pathways, and patient-provider communication. The mechanisms of action of mindfulness and other mind-body therapies in the healing process are of particular interest.
