Catalina Berenblum Tobi

Catalina Berenblum Tobi, 4th year UNC Medical Student, has been named the 2023 William Hersey Davis Jr., MD Pediatric Student Scholar.

Catalina impressed the selection committee with the way “she delivers patient care with a very conscious patient-centered approach. Her empathy for her patients is so strong, and the way she talks about her experiences and hopes for the future really made us all feel inspired!”

Catalina first became a part of the UNC community as an undergraduate through the Robertson Scholars Leadership Program; the program includes dual enrollment at Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She joined the UNC School of Medicine class of 2024 and, among other activities, has been very involved as a member of the Patient Advisory Council of ImproveCareNow (ICN) advising and improving care for patients with pediatric inflammatory bowel disease.

The medical student named the William Hersey Davis, Jr., MD Pediatric Student Scholar demonstrates a scholarly approach to pediatric medicine; an exemplary sensitivity, concern and care for children of all backgrounds; a special talent for putting patients and parents at ease; a willingness to both listen and provide clear explanations; a recognizable ability to gain the trust of patients, families, and other medical providers; high moral standards and ethical values; and a passion for enhancing the well-being of children everywhere.

The Scholarship honors Dr. Davis, who was the first Chief Resident in Pediatrics at the North Carolina Memorial Hospital and in the UNC Department of Pediatrics. The Pediatric Student scholarship is funded through a generous gift from Pamela Davis Leight (daughter of Dr. Davis) and George Staples Leight, Jr., MD.

Congratulations Catalina!
