Dr. Belhorn earned both his PhD in virology and his MD at UNC-Chapel Hill. Following his Pediatric Residency at the Children’s Hospital of Alabama and Pediatric Infectious Disease Fellowship at the Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, Dr. Belhorn briefly joined the faculty at the Univ. Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Science in Houston but soon returned to UNC-Chapel Hill as an Assistant Professor in Pediatric Infectious Diseases in 1999. Throughout his career Dr. Belhorn has been an active clinician, educator, and researcher. Dr. Belhorn is the director for the Ryan White Program-funded UNC Pediatric and Adolescent Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) Program, which provides care for infants, children and adolescents who are HIV-infected or HIV-exposed. As the Program Director for the UNC Pediatric Infectious Disease Fellowship, he demonstrates his ongoing dedication to medical education.

Beginning in 1955, the UNC School of Medicine has been celebrating exemplary alumni and faculty with its Distinguished Medical Awards. These awards were established to recognize those who had made an important contribution to the founding and growth of the four-year medical school at UNC. The Distinguished Faculty Award honors excellence in teaching, contributions to medicine in the state, leadership in continuing education of practicing physicians and improvement of communication between UNC faculty, alumni, and residents of the state. All full-time UNC School of Medicine and AHEC faculty are eligible for nomination.

Dr. Belhorn and other honorees will be celebrated at a banquet during Spring Medical Alumni Weekend, on Friday, April 26, at the Rizzo Center in Chapel Hill.

Congratulations Tom!
