Maureen Farrell, MD, MS, Pediatric Resident in the Physician Scientist Training Program, and Dr. Kori Flower as her primary mentor, have been awarded the Dr. Jacob A. Lohr Research Award for her proposal titled “Exploring the Effect of a Clinic-Based Childhood Literacy Promotion Program among Medicaid-Covered Newborns at a Residency Continuity Clinic.”
The project plans to study the impact of a literacy program being introduced in June 2024 on infants and families receiving Medicaid and enrolled in UNC Pediatric Continuity Clinic. The main study aim is to measure reported days/week with reading to study infants, comparing the pre- and post-intervention cohorts, with pre-intervention cohort described retrospectively. The study also aims to describe the cognitive environment of the infants in the post-intervention group, as measured by caregiver survey using the STIM-Q questionnaire.
Reviewers described this as a “really well-designed project with high potential for impact in the field of general pediatric research. The topic is a pressing one, and the project proposes to study it in a novel and accessible way.”
Congratulations Maureen!
