Sara Pittenger, MD

Dr. Sara Pittenger, Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and Pediatrics, has been named the inaugural Vice Chair of Clinical Integration within the Department of Pediatrics.

Dr. Pittenger is a Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiologist and serves as the Division Chief for Pediatric Anesthesiology within the Department of Anesthesiology. She completed her undergraduate training at Indiana University, medical school at Northwestern University, and residency and fellowship at the University of Chicago. She came to UNC in 2010, and then, in 2012-13, she completed her Congenital Cardiac Anesthesiology Training here at UNC. She is now one of the key leaders within the Pediatric Heart Center and serves on the Children’s Executive Council. She is known as an excellent leader, clinician, educator, and creative thinker.

In her new role with the Department of Pediatrics, Dr. Pittenger will help lead the alignment and integration of clinical services that cross the sixteen academic departments that are home to children’s specialists. These tangible efforts to broaden multidisciplinary care and improve integration will help to set the foundation for the success of the Children’s Service Line and eventually the North Carolina Children’s Health System currently in development.
