UNC Health Talk: Stay Safe from Summer Smoke and Heat

Summer is a great time for being outdoors—usually. But high temperatures can make outside fun uncomfortable, even dangerous. And smoke from wildfires and even campfires can seriously affect the quality of the air we breathe. UNC Health spoke with pediatric allergist and immunologist David Peden, MD, MS, to learn what impact smoke and high temperatures can have on our health as we head outside to work and play.

Wang Joins AOE as Foundation Phase Academic Coach

Congratulations to Dr. Kathleen Wang as she joins the School of Medicine Office of Academic Excellence as a Foundation Phase Academic Coach. In this role, she will coach and support medical students in their foundation phase (MS1 and MS2) to ensure academic success and personal wellbeing.

Welcome New Research Faculty: Elizabeth Corteselli, PhD

March 15, 2023

Elizabeth Corteselli joined the Division of Allergy/Immunology and the Center for Environmental Medicine, Asthma and Lung Biology (CEMALB) as an Assistant Professor on March 15, 2023. Dr. Corteselli received her PhD from the UNC Gilling’s School of Global Public Health under the mentorship of Dr. Jim Samet from the U.S. EPA. She conducted her postdoc with received her PhD from the UNC Gilling’s School of Global Public Health under the mentorship of Dr. Jim Samet from the U.S. EPA. She conducted her postdoc with Dr. Yvonne Janssen-Heininger at the University of Vermont where she received a Parker B. Francis Fellowship. Her research interests focus on adverse respiratory effects caused by oxidative stress using innovative experimental models and state-of-the-art techniques. We are thrilled to welcome her back to UNC!

Kim Elected as AAAAI Food Allergy Secretary

Congratulations to Dr. Edwin Kim on his election as Food Allergy & Eosinophilic Disorders (FAED) Interest Section Secretary in the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI). Interest Section Secretaries are responsible for a number of important tasks within the AAAAI. This position ultimately ascends to Interest Section Chair, and is a six-year leadership commitment. All interest section leaders actively participate in the Annual Meeting programming development process and the abstract review process.

The AAAAI is the leading membership organization of more than 7,000 allergists / immunologists (in the United States, Canada and 72 other countries) and patients’ trusted resource for allergies, asthma and immune deficiency disorders. This membership includes allergist / immunologists, other medical specialists, allied health and related healthcare professionals—all with a special interest in the research and treatment of allergic and immunologic diseases.

Rebuli and Frazer Join APS SPR Journeys & Frontiers in Pediatric Research Program

Congratulations to Megan Rebuli, PhD, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Allergy-Immunology, and Lauren Frazer, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, on their nomination and acceptance to participate in the American Pediatric Society (APS) – Society for Pediatric Research (SPR) Journeys & Frontiers in Pediatric Research program for 2022-2023.

Jaspers Elected IUTOX Vice-President

The International Union of Toxicology elected Dr. Ilona Jaspers to the position of Vice-President for a 3-year term. The IUTOX mission is to improve human health through the science and practice of toxicology world-wide.
