Steiner on CBS17: Triangle doctors seeing children ill with viruses that are more active in fall or winter

“This summer, we’ve seen RSV and another virus called parainfluenza. Both of those are having a spike at our hospital right now,” explained Dr. Michael Steiner, the pediatrician in chief at UNC Children’s. “We think this is, in part, related to the fact that through the winter season people were socially distancing, and spacing, and wearing masks, and the viruses didn’t have their usual time where they peak.”

Hernandez Promoted to Professor

Michelle Hernandez, MD, Division of Allergy-Immunology, was promoted to Professor of Pediatrics effective July 16, 2021. Dr. Hernandez has been a faculty member in Pediatric Allergy-Immunology since 2007.

Welcome New Physician Faculty: Arshiya Ahuja, MD

Dr. Ahuja joined the Department of Pediatrics as faculty in Hospital Pediatrics on July 12, 2021. Dr. Ahuja completed her Pediatric residency at Loyola University in June 2014 and a fellowship in Global Clinical Education at Massachusetts General Hospital in 2015. Most recently, Dr. Ahuja has served as a Pediatric Hospitalist at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, NJ.

Welcome New Physician Faculty: Bianca Allison, MD, MPH

Dr. Allison joined the Department of Pediatrics as faculty in General Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine on July 12, 2021. She joined UNC as a Pediatric Resident until 2019 and subsequently completed her National Research Service Award fellowship at UNC in 2021.

Welcome New Physician Faculty: Lauren Frazer, MD, PhD

Dr. Frazer joined the Department of Pediatrics as faculty in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine on July 5, 2021. She completed her Pediatric residency at UNC Chapel Hill in 2018 and, in June 2021, she completed a fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital/Harvard University.

Welcome New Chief of Pediatric Endocrinology

The Department of Pediatrics is excited to announce that Nancie J. MacIver, MD, PhD, has accepted our offer to serve as the new Division Chief of Pediatric Endocrinology. Dr. MacIver will be starting in June 2021.
