UNC Health Talk: Stay Safe from Summer Smoke and Heat

Summer is a great time for being outdoors—usually. But high temperatures can make outside fun uncomfortable, even dangerous. And smoke from wildfires and even campfires can seriously affect the quality of the air we breathe. UNC Health spoke with pediatric allergist and immunologist David Peden, MD, MS, to learn what impact smoke and high temperatures can have on our health as we head outside to work and play.

Wang Joins AOE as Foundation Phase Academic Coach

Congratulations to Dr. Kathleen Wang as she joins the School of Medicine Office of Academic Excellence as a Foundation Phase Academic Coach. In this role, she will coach and support medical students in their foundation phase (MS1 and MS2) to ensure academic success and personal wellbeing.

UNC Children’s named to U.S. News’ “Best Children’s Hospitals” list for 15th straight year

UNC Children’s in Chapel Hill has been ranked among the nation’s top children’s hospitals, according to U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Children’s Hospitals” report released today. UNC Children’s was ranked as the #2 children’s hospital in North Carolina and #4 in the Southeast region. The hospital is nationally ranked in nine out of 10 pediatric specialties, two in the top 20: Pediatric Pulmonology and Neurology/Neurosurgery.

Welcome New Clinical Provider: Lindsay Dyer, MSN, PNP

Lindsay Dyer, MSN, PNP joined Hematology-Oncology on June 12, 2023. Lindsay began working at UNC Children’s as a Registered Nurse/Certified Pediatric Nurse in 2015. She earned her Masters of Science in Nursing from UNC-Chapel Hill in May of 2021. Since graduating she has worked as a Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and BMT Nurse Practitioner Fellow at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston and a Pediatric Transplant and Cellular Therapy Nurse Practitioner at Duke. Welcome back Lindsay!

Adolescents Invested in Potential Impacts of Abortion Restrictions

Bianca A. Allison, MD MPH, an assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics, sought to examine the awareness and knowledge that adolescents have about the legal landscape of abortion and how these changes might affect them and their communities. The study, published in the Journal of Adolescent Health, found that many adolescents – across a diversity of ages, genders, and geographies – are aware of and concerned about the potential impacts of abortion restrictions.

Mvalo Promoted to Associate Professor of Pediatrics

Tisu Mvalo, MD was promoted to Associate Professor of Pediatrics effective June 1, 2023. Dr. Mvalo has been a faculty member in Pediatrics since 2016. Dr. Mvalo practices at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe, Malawi. He also provides on-the-ground mentorship for the rotating learners and is the PI for several ongoing research studies at UNC Project Malawi.

Welcome New Clinical Provider: Theresa Campbell, MSN, NNP

May 30, 2023

Theresa Campbell, MSN, NNP joined Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine on May 30, 2023. She recently graduated from the Vanderbilt University MSN/NNP training program after completing her clinical hours at Children’s Hospital of Georgia. She has over 10 years NICU nursing and lactation work experience. Theresa also served over 10 years in the U.S. Army. Welcome Theresa!

Dellon Honored with H. Fleming Fuller Award

May 15, 2023

Elisabeth Dellon, MD, MPH, Professor of Pediatrics and Medical Director of the Children’s Supportive Care Team, was honored with this year’s H. Fleming Fuller Award. The award was presented on May 15 during a meeting of the UNC Health Board of Directors. For more than 35 years, the Award has been given to the physician who best embodies Fuller’s commitment to patient care, teaching, and community.

Welcome New Physician Faculty: Sonia Varghese, MD, MPH, MBA

May 15, 2023

Dr. Varghese joined the Department of Pediatrics as faculty on May 15, 2023. Dr. Varghese received her BA from Austin College in Sherman, Texas in 2008, her MPH form the University of North Texas Health Science Center – Fort Worth in 2010 and completed her medical degree at the American University of Antigua School of Medicine in 2016. She was a Pediatric Resident at UNC from 2016 to 2019. She completed her subspeciality training in Child Neurology at UNC in 2022. Since graduating, she has practiced with THINK Neurology for Kids in Houston TX. Welcome back Sonia!
