Membership in the society confers recognition of someone’s dedication to the profession and art of healing.
Carissa Donica, a high school senior, recently completed a Girl Scout Gold Award project to raise awareness of phenylketonuria (PKU). Carissa sought to educate and provide food for local children with PKU. She created a teaching module about PKU and was able to raise approximately $7,000. Funds raised were used to provide low-protein supplies for the food pantry at the UNC Children’s Hospital for distribution to families of children with PKU. UNC Children’s is proud of Carissa and grateful to her for such an impactful gift!
The Society for Pediatric Sedation recently announced that UNC Children’s Hospital has earned the designation of Center of Excellence in Pediatric Sedation. Congratulations!

Dr. Kelley Ward joined the Division of Hospital Pediatrics as Adjunct Faculty on March 3, 2022. She received her BS in Biochemestry from the University of Florida in 2012 and her medical degree from the University of Florida College of Medicine in 2016. Dr. Ward completed her pediatric residency at the UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital in 2019. She was most recently with AdventHealth Ocala where she was a Pediatric Hospitalist. Welcome Kelley!
The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated a critical need to establish a pre-emptive stockpile of tangible immunobiological countermeasures to accelerate the response to potential pandemic threats. To address this need we have established a pandemic response repository through microbial and immunological surveillance and epidemiology (PREMISE) initiative.
Jenny Miedema joined the Division of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine on February 1, 2022. Ms. Miedema received her BA from Washington University in St. Louis in 2001 and her MSN form the University of Tennessee in Knoxville in 2005. She completed her training as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner at Duke University in 2010 where she continued to work in NICU through 2017. Jenny will be working in the UNC Newborn Critical Care Center on a part-time basis. Welcome Jenny
