Congratulations to Dr. Matt Laughon, Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, on earning the 2025 Impact Article of the Year (IAOTY) from the International Society for Evidence-Based Neonatology (EBNEO). The honor recognizes the landmark JAMA publication, “Expectant Management vs Medication for Patent Ductus Arteriosus in Preterm Infants,” authored by Dr. Laughon and his collaborators with the NICHD Neonatal Research Network.

Pediatrics hosted its annual Thomas F. Boat Evening of Scholarship on May 11, 2026, in Roper Hall, bringing together trainees and faculty to present and award research spanning basic science, clinical care, quality improvement, and education. The event featured a keynote by Bob Vinci, MD, and highlighted outstanding projects and mentorship across a wide range of topics, from global health to genetic discovery.

For more than half a century, the Department of Pediatrics at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine has offered excellent, cutting-edge care in our children’s units at UNC Hospitals. 2002 marked the beginning of a new era. For the first time, all pediatric services were provided out of a single state-of-the-art facility, NC Children’s Hospital. Located on the UNC medical campus in Chapel Hill, NC, the Children’s Hospital allows the Department to provide complete inpatient and outpatient care for children in one location, a true children’s hospital.
