On May 29, four UNC RadOnc sites were awarded 4-year APEx accreditation by the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO). This achievement was the culmination of 2 years of preparation and successful facility visits, which included medical record review, training audits, and team interviews.
The Chapel Hill, McCreary, Hillsborough, and Rockingham sites were accredited, the latter two achieving the award for the first time. Alison Amos, Ph.D., led the accreditation project for UNC RadOnc, managing cross-disciplinary teams at all four locations. Dr. Amos credits the support of everyone involved, particularly the physics leads (Adria Vidovic, Cielle Collins, Phillip Cubbage, and Curtis Whiddon) and Dr. Ashley Weiner. Ultimately, it was a department-wide effort. Amos says, “We could not have done this without the support others offered that allowed space for our teams to pursue this.”
There is more work to come—the goal is to have all 10 sites be APEx accredited in the next few years. For now, congratulations!
