Former Chair of Radiation Oncology

The Department is deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Carolyn Sartor, former Chair of Radiation Oncology, on July 17, 2017 in Volterra, Italy.

Despite struggling with multiple cancers over a 30 years period, Dr. Sartor nevertheless rose through the academic ranks to become a full professor, chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology, and co-director of the Breast Cancer Program at UNC’s Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. A radiation oncology physician-scientist by training, she designed new cancer therapies, tested them in preclinical models, and translated them into clinical trials for cancer patients.

A celebration of Dr. Sartor’s life was held on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at the Magical Forest Farm in Hillsborough, NC, and was attended by friends, UNC colleagues, former students and patients.

Carolyn I. Sartor, MD Donations in Dr. Sartor’s memory may be made to New Life after Cancer (a non-profit breast cancer survivorship program she established), P.O. Box 4633, Chapel Hill, NC, 27515.
