After 41 years of service at UNC Radiation Oncology

On August 11, 2017, we bid a fond farewell to our longest-serving physician faculty member (since 1976!), gynecologic radiation oncologist Mahesh Varia, MD, FASTRO on the occasion of his retirement.

Thank you, Dr. Varia, for your long, distinguished service to our patients, for leading our medical residency program for over two decades and training several generations of radiation oncology residents, and for your leadership roles in the American Society of Radiation Oncology and the Gynecologic Oncology Group in clinical trial development and radiation biology research on tumor hypoxia. Dr. Varia, a multiple recipient of UNC Health Care and UNC Faculty Physicians Awards for Carolina Care Excellence and frequent “Best Doctors in America®” selectee, is also well-known for his humanitarian work in remote Gandevi, India, a rural locale lacking in cancer diagnostic and treatment facilities and expertise. As a UNC Healthcare Employee Ambassador and through his affiliation with the Rotary Foundation and the Association of Indian Physicians of Northern Ohio, he routinely performs more than 50 hours a year of this noble form of community service.
