UNC/Duke Invited Speaker Dr. Matilda Nicholas

Our next event on March 12th at 7pm at Duke is an evening conversation with one of our MD-PhD program’s alumni now working at Duke in Dermatology, Dr. Matilda Nicholas! During this event Dr. Nicholas will speak with us on her career development over time, the challenges she has faced while trying to balance residency with her research goals, and what she has been doing to achieve her research goals since at Duke. Dr. Nicholas is also the author of a well-known and very entertaining blog about her life as an MD/PhD Student, from the beginning of medical school up to and including her faculty appointment. UNC AMPWIS CV Development Workshop

In a UNC AMPWIS event on February 19th from 6-7:30pm in Bondurant 2035Amy Blackburn and colleagues from both the UNC and Duke Career Services will lead a workshop aimed at providing us with the tools necessary to professionally format our CVs.

***Students should prepare their CV ahead of the event and bring a printed version with them.***

The workshop will start with a review of the basics for the academic CV and NIH Biosketch. Then students will break out into five groups, where each group will have a staff member to review their CV’s and provide feedback.

This is an incredibly valuable opportunity to have professional feedback on CV formatting and content. We hope to see you all there!

UNC/Duke AMPWIS Presents Tax Planning for Physician Scientists!

A joint UNC/Duke AMPWIS event hosted by Northwestern Mutual on January 13, 2015 at 8am.

We have assembled a team of wealth advisors with years of experience working with the special financial planning needs of scientists and future physicians. This seminar will focus on tax-planning with additional time to address attendee-generated questions.

This seminar is sure to be useful for all of us as this is a topic in which we typically receive little guidance and there is so much confusion. Simplify your life by learning what we all should be doing now to plan for the future!

UNC/Duke AMPWIS Book Club – The Confidence Code!

Please join us on December 2nd at 7pm for an exciting night of discussing “The Confidence Code” by Katty Kay and Claire Shipman. This will be a joint book club with the Duke AMPWIS group, and sure to be a really fun discussion!

Before the event, please take the paired Confidence Code quiz, and we will have an additional self-assessment there looking at the difference between confidence and self-perceived effectiveness. We will then reflect on our quiz results and discuss themes of the book.

Invited Speaker – Dr. Priscilla Wyrick

She looks forward to sharing her historical perspective on women in science, and several eye opening experiences she had while navigating higher education and academia as one of the first women in her field.

AMPWIS Mentor Social!

Please come join us this Wednesday, October 1st, at 5pm in Bondurant G-074 for a relaxed social hour with eight of our accomplished faculty mentors.  This is an excellent opportunity to speak with incredible scientists from a diverse set of fields who are enthusiastic about providing career tips and advice to MD-PhD students.  We will spend the first 30 minutes informally socializing with the mentors, followed by targeted break out groups by fields of interest for field specific questions, advice, and networking.
