Nielsen Named Chair of the Department of Urology
After serving the Department as Interim Chair since January 2020, Matthew Nielsen, MD, MS, FACS has been appointed as Chair, effective November 2020. Nielsen joined the faculty at UNC in 2009 as a urologic oncologist and health services researcher after completing medical school and residency training at Johns Hopkins. Since joining the UNC faculty, he obtained advanced training in clinical research from the Gillings School of Global Public Health and healthcare delivery improvement from the Intermountain Healthcare Delivery Institute.

5 UNC Urology Faculty Physicians Join Growing List of Department’s ‘Castle Connolly Top Doctors’
Congratulations to Drs. Borawski, Bukowski, Coward, Figler, Nielsen, Ross, Smith, Sutherland, Viprakasit, and Wallen received the 2020 'Top Doctor' designation from Castle Connolly. Drs. Borawski, Ross, and Smith also were included on Castle Connolly’s 2020 list of 'Exceptional Women In Medicine.'

Patient a Friend to Others on Bladder Cancer Journey
That struggle inspired Willey to start Hands of Hope, a program that drew on her familiarity with the UNC hospitals and her desire to improve cancer care for patients in the Outer Banks. The program, which offered rides to UNC hospitals as well as other services, grew in leaps and bounds, and Willey has since passed the reins to new leaders. “It’s like watching your baby grow up,” she said.
