Residency

Welcome from the Program Director

The UNC Department of Anesthesiology has a great tradition of training anesthesiologists. Our graduates achieve very high levels in private practice and in academic environments. Our ACGME-accredited program has residents from across the country and has well above national average board pass rates in the ABA certification process.  About two thirds of our graduating classes go on to do fellowships in a variety of subspecialties and most of them get their first or second choices.  Currently we have 52 residents which includes 10 positions at the PGY-1 level. The CA-1 through CA-3 years has 14 residents in each class.  The size of our program is matched up to an all-encompassing clinical experience that leads to great competency upon completion of the program. UNC has limited fellowships that lead to frequent and direct instruction from our outstanding group of faculty, which currently numbers 58 MD’s.   The fellowships are in clinical areas where we can easily train both residents and subspecialty fellows. (pediatric anesthesia, pain medicine)   We also have over 50 nurse anesthetists in the department that allow for flexibility in the teaching mission. Despite the volume and acuity of care offered here, our residents train in a very collegial and supportive environment and that includes the relationship with our surgical colleagues here.

The challenge of mastering the specialty that is Anesthesiology is enormous. New drugs, new techniques, and new equipment are always being introduced. Patients have more complex surgical and medical problems. The advances in anesthesiology and perioperative care have allowed for aggressive use of invasive procedures and surgeries in even the sickest of patients. The foundation of our specialty's growth and success is rooted in the anesthesiology residency training program. This is where the fundamentals are learned, as well as habits developed. I have complete confidence that there is no better place to train than at UNC. The residency is the focal point of our department, and education leads our mission.  We function well as a team here.

I am continually amazed by the quality of individuals that make up our department. I could not imagine being anywhere but here. Please look around our website, but more importantly, I hope I get a chance to meet you in person when you visit here.
