Welcome to UNC Anesthesiology Residency! We have all enjoyed our years here and are excited to share with you some of the reasons that we chose UNC!
First and foremost – the people. Over the years, our fellow residents have truly become our best friends. We love spending time together, both inside and outside of work. In the hospital, we support one another, often helping to get complex cases started or prepare the OR for an emergency.
Our faculty have a wealth of knowledge and strive to provide us with top–tier training. They give us autonomy when appropriate and are always available for questions when needed. Our CRNAs and CAAs are valuable members of the UNC Anesthesia team, checking in on us frequently for breaks from the OR and sharing teaching points learned over their years of experience. We also build friendships with our Anesthesia Technicians who make sure we have everything we need to conduct our anesthetic for the day. Finally, without the department’s administrative support staff, most of us would never make it through residency. They ensure we meet the requirements needed to graduate, help us coordinate travel to meetings, and are always available to answer questions. We are honored to not just call all these people our colleagues, but also our friends and “Anesthesia Family.”
From Day 1 of intern year, this community is evident. The department supported us throughout intern year, pairing each of us with one faculty member and a senior resident to create a personal support network. We also have developed a tradition of “First Fridays,” where the program leadership meets with the entire intern class for lunch on the first Friday of every month. With these events and more, our interns maintain contact with their home department throughout the year.
Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill (aka “the Triangle”) is a great place to live. Not only do we have access to all the amenities of three unique cities, but also have an easy weekend drive to the beach or mountains. Our residents spend a lot of time outside of the hospital together. We frequently meet up on Franklin Street, the many local breweries, and Fridays on the Front Porch at the Carolina Inn. Those with children bring their families together at one another’s homes, the Durham Life and Science Museum, one of the many great parks in the Chapel Hill area, or for ice cream at Eno River Farm or Maple View Farm.
The education we receive at UNC is among the best in the nation. As a large, academic state hospital, we care for a diverse and complex patient population. We receive a wide breadth of clinical training that begins on the first day of residency. Our intern year consists of rotations in internal medicine, pediatrics, emergency medicine, surgery, critical care medicine, and anesthesiology. Our clinical anesthesia years are filled with a strong educational curriculum, top–notch simulation activities, and robust mentorship. Our world-class faculty are dedicated to our education, training, and research endeavors. We know that when we leave UNC, we will be prepared for our next career steps, whether that is fellowship or general practice.
