UNC Anesthesiology congratulates Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology Fei Chen, PhD, for receiving the 2023 Society for Education in Anesthesiology (SEA) Philip Liu Award for Innovation in Anesthesia Education.
As both the SEA’s Founder (1984) and first President, Dr. Philip Liu advanced his vision of helping improve education in anesthesia via the SEA’s work and mission. The Philip Liu Awards for Innovations in Anesthesia Education honorees were established in 2017. Award recipients are chosen annually for achievement in one of two areas: 1) Outstanding anesthesia education research; or 2) Innovations in curriculum that improve anesthesia education. At the SEA’s annual meeting mid-April 2023, Dr. Chen was honored for her achievements in Education Research as a Philip Liu Award for Innovation in Anesthesia Education recipient.
Dr. Chen invests her medical education expertise in leadership, curricular advancement and research in three primary areas: 1) approaches to teaching and learning; 2) assessment and evaluation of recruitment, knowledge, skills and attitudes; and 3) curriculum development; learning and assessment, research design and statistics. She serves on multiple SEA committees and is additionally an Assessment and Scholarship, Association of Anesthesiology Program Administrators and Educators (AAPAE) Council Member. Dr. Chen has received honors and investigative funding for her research in family anesthesia experience intervention and education programs that improve both wellness and relationships among residents and their support persons. Within the institution, Dr. Chen is a UNC Academy of Educators (AoE) Leadership Council member and UNC Anesthesiology Academic Medicine Rotation Co-Director, among other leadership roles.
