Residency Program
Welcome to the
UNC Anesthesiology
Residency Program
The UNC Department of Anesthesiology, which dates back to 1969, has a long tradition of training outstanding anesthesiologists. Our ACGME-accredited program is comprised of 62 residency positions (14 PGY-1 positions and 16 positions in each CA class). Every year, we attract some of the top residency candidates from across the country. Our residents are exposed to a diverse clinical experience caring for some of the state’s sickest patients, leading to clinical competence and expertise upon completion of training. Our residents continuously match into the fellowships of their choice and obtain jobs at their desired practices. Despite the volume and acuity of care offered at UNC- a Level 1 Trauma Center—our residents train in a collegial and supportive environment with a strong academic mission. We are committed to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace that enhances our learning environment and promotes innovative research and the delivery of high quality patient care. Our department prioritizes resident education and facilitates our board preparation, our simulation curriculum, and innovative approaches to education such as the intern Academic Medicine Rotation and the CA-1 Family Anesthesia Day. Ultimately, what makes UNC such an amazing place to work and train are our people. We have an outstanding group of nationally recognized, dedicated teaching faculty and team-oriented residents who take care of each other and form lasting relationships. Additionally, we have outstanding CRNAs and AAs, anesthesia technicians and support and research staff. I could not imagine being anywhere but here. Please look around our website, but more importantly, I hope I get the chance to meet you in person.
