UNC Anesthesiology proudly celebrates the national educational contributions of Drs. John Coleman, Andres Rojas, and Nathan Painter, all of whom have been formally recognized by the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) for their service to the Summaries of Emerging Evidence (SEE) program.
SEE is a nationally and internationally distributed continuing medical education (CME) program that synthesizes emerging research in anesthesiology, critical care, and pain medicine. Published twice yearly, SEE reviews 200 high-impact articles annually drawn from approximately 30 international medical journals and reaches more than 5,500 subscribers worldwide. The program is widely regarded as one of the ASA’s most influential educational offerings and depends entirely on the volunteer efforts of expert anesthesiologist educators.
National Leadership Across the SEE Editorial Continuum
Together, Drs. Coleman, Rojas, and Painter represent excellence across all levels of the SEE program — from early career writer to full writer to editor.
-
UNC Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology Dr. John Coleman, an editor since October 2024, has been a SEE contributor since 2021. He has authored 20 SEE written works, 17 of which have been published across multiple volumes. He has also edited and provided content expertise for additional items written by peers. As an editor, Dr. Coleman reviews multiple journals monthly, mentors novice writers, participates in quarterly national editorial board meetings, and has edited items featured in the ASA Monitor. His contributions represent an estimated 300+ hours of national service annually and reflect exceptional leadership in anesthesia education.
-
UNC Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology Dr. Andres Rojas, a novice writer since April 2024, has already made meaningful contributions to SEE, authoring four items with two published in recent volumes. Through close mentorship and participation in the rigorous peer-review and editorial process, Dr. Rojas is developing the scholarly foundation required for national educational leadership within anesthesiology.
-
UNC Associate Professor of Anesthesiology Dr. Nathan (“Nate”) Painter, a full writer since February 2024, has contributed 14 SEE items since joining the program in 2022, with six published across five volumes. He advanced from novice to full writer through sustained scholarly productivity and has participated in national editorial meetings, further strengthening UNC’s presence in ASA educational initiatives.
Advancing Anesthesiology Through Service and Scholarship
The SEE program relies on hundreds of volunteer hours from a select group of writers and editors nationwide. Recognition from ASA leadership underscores the significance of these faculty members’ contributions—not only to continuing medical education but also to advancing anesthesiology as a specialty.
UNC Anesthesiology Chair Ted Sakai, MD, PhD, MHA, FASA, noted: ” We congratulate Drs. Coleman, Rojas, and Painter on this well-earned national recognition and thank them for exemplifying UNC’s commitment to academic excellence, educational leadership, and professional service.”
