UNC Blood Research Center member Dougald Monroe, PhD is a coauthor on a paper published in Nature Communications. The article, Efficacy and safety of next-generation tick transcriptome-derived direct thrombin inhibitors, provides data on a new, safer anticoagulant. This anticoagulant is derived by making directed modifications to the sequence of a naturally occurring anticoagulant found in ticks. In animal models, this anticoagulant had a wider therapeutic range with less bleeding than existing therapeutics bivalirudin and unfractionated heparin.
