Super Steward Awards Nomination Form

Super Steward Awardees

The UNC Hospitals colleagues below were recognized with Super Steward awards. Read on for details from their nomination.

Stacy Campbell-Bright, PharmD

2023 Recipient
Dr. Campbell-Bright is an excellent critical care pharmacist and an advocate for antimicrobial stewardship in the MICU. She promotes optimal antibiotic use for all her patients as a part of her daily work activities. She trains pharmacy students and residents to think from the stewardship perspective. Dr. Campbell-Bright is a role model for stewardship in critical care.

Briana Castillo, MD

2023 Recipient
Antimicrobial stewardship is a top priority in Dr. Castillo’s patient care. She consistently discontinues or de-escalates antibiotic therapy appropriately to save her patient’s microbiomes and reduce unnecessary consequences tied to continued antibiotic use. Dr. Castillo quickly recognizes inappropriate lab orders and often questioned the utility of additional testing requested by clinicians throughout the hospital. She regularly offered to reach out to these clinicians, educate them about their orders, and help them pick a more appropriate regimen.

Will Kwan

Will Kwan, MD

2023 Recipient
Dr. Will Kwan has been involved with CASP – attending meetings and collaborating on guideline development and strategy implementation – for three years. Over that time, he has encouraged his colleagues to become familiar with the shortest durations of antimicrobial therapy by championing the Shorter. Safer. Better campaign in late 2021 and collaborating with Dr. Zach Willis and Dr. Bill Wilson on a pediatric antibiotic selection guide in early 2023. He’s supported the core CASP team with brainstorming annual strategies and routinely stepping up to offer his expertise as a Hospitalist. Dr. Kwan “is a willing and capable antimicrobial stewardship advocate”.

Kevin Alby

Kevin Alby, PhD

2022 Recipient
“Dr. Alby provides exceptional support to our program and is always willing to share his knowledge and expertise. He is a fantastic teammate, always helpful, approachable and willing to contribute to many multidisciplinary efforts to improve patient care.”

Mildred Kwan, MD, PhD

2022 Recipient
Dr. Kwan has been an integral partner in the development of the protocols and training programs for penicillin allergy assessments. She has also assisted in implementation of policies and procedures that lead to improved therapies for our patients.

Jesica Mangun

Jesica Mangun, PharmD

2022 Recipient
“Dr. Mangun has been instrumental in the success of the antibiotic time-outs. Her partnership on iterating the Epic tool is just one example of her willingness to work side-by-side with the project team to make the project even better.”

Melissa Miller

Melissa Miller, PhD

2022 Recipient
“Dr. Miller’s leadership in the micro lab has been instrumental to the work of antimicrobial stewardship for many years. She is an outstanding team member and champion for antimicrobial stewardship,” according to her nominators.

Michael Phillips, MD

2022 Recipient
Dr. Phillips is an ally who is able to broker understanding and build support for stewardship interventions that involve challenging the status quo. “When it comes to identifying a Super Steward, there is no question that Dr. Phillips fits the bill. He consistently encourages the stewardship mindset among his peers and those he trains and teaches.”
