Dr. Jane Brice, featured on the cover of SAEM Pulse magazine.

Leading with “curiosity and kindness” have been the hallmarks of her many roles as a physician, teacher, mentor and coach, and nationally recognized thought leader in her field.

As the article states about her journey from the back of an ambulance to being the Chair of Emergency Medicine at one of the country’s leading academic medical centers, Dr. Brice has spent her career building bridges — between prehospital and hospital care, between research and practice, and between emerging leaders and the mentors who help shape them.

Despite the incredible evolution in the practice of Emergency Medicine over the past 30+ years, her professional focus has consistently remained centered around bridging the delivery of the most advanced medicine and practices, with traditional values such as kindness, empathy, focus on the needs of her colleagues, students, and most importantly, patients.

That over-riding philosophy is one reason that UNC Emergency Medicine is renowned for consistently providing premier training, research and personalized, compassionate patient care in its fast-paced and ever changing field. And it’s why the medical experts who have graduated from its program have carried on those traditions to the larger field of practice.

As stated by Dr. Brice:

“I would advise the next generation of emergency physicians to remain humble, to be curious and to enjoy the ride. There is nothing more important in this world than seeing each other as truly human and extending kindness to one another. It’s how we make the world go round. That’s how we get through this life together.”

Dr. Brice began her medical career in 1994, upon receiving her MD from UNC in Chapel Hill, followed by an MPH from UNC in 1998. She took the helm of the Department of Emergency Medicine in 2015, after 20+ years of service as a faculty member.

She is an accomplished investigator, having held multiple federal grants with a focus on the care of patients in the out-of-hospital environment provided by Emergency Medical Services personnel. Dr. Brice is also a widely-published and recognized expert in the prehospital care, and she is the Editor-In-Chief for Prehospital Emergency Care.
