Since joining the department in 2019, Dr. Halsey-Nichols has distinguished herself as an outstanding educator, mentor, clinician, and leader.

Since joining UNC Emergency Medicine in 2019, Dr. Howard Choi has been a valued clinician, educator, mentor, and leader dedicated to advancing medical education.

Jane Brice, MD, MPH, will step down from her role as chair of the department of emergency medicine in June of 2027. She has served as chair since 2015. Dr. Brice is also a professor of emergency medicine and holds an adjunct appointment in the department of social medicine.

With great pride and warm wishes, the UNC Department of Emergency Medicine congratulates the Class of 2026 on their recent residency and fellowship graduation, celebrated at the Academic Banquet on June 21 at the Carolina Inn in Chapel Hill.

The UNC Department of Emergency Medicine is pleased to announce that Dr. Smeet Bhimani, a Clinical Assistant Professor and Associate Medical Director, is assuming a key role on behalf of emergency medicine professionals in North Carolina.

Dr. Biese is a long-time advocate and widely recognized expert clinician, researcher and thought leader regarding care of geriatric patients in the Emergency Medicine arena.

Approximately 70 physicians, residents and esteemed guests attended the recent ceremony, in which Dr. Tintinalli was recognized for the transformative impact she has had on the field of Emergency Medicine during her remarkable 30-year career.

A collaboration between UNC School of Medicine and University of California-San Francisco will examine how improving sleep might reduce PTSD side-effects.

When Hurricane Helene devastated parts of western North Carolina in the Fall of 2024, Dr. Stephen Gamboa swung into high gear, leading a medical team whose responses were so well orchestrated that their work is being held up as an example for other medical professionals who may face similar circumstances.

The pilot study will evaluate the effectiveness and feasibility of prehospital OUD management and intervention strategies, and will bridge statewide Emergency Medical Services (EMS) survey data, EMS electronic health records, and stakeholder interviews.

One goal of the study, which was recently published in the Annals of Emergency Medicine, was to help better characterize patient populations at risk of suicide.

We once again celebrate Match Day, marking the culmination of four years of rigorous studies and hard work for physicians completing their medical school training, and the beginning of training in their area of specialization.
