Philip Spanheimer, MD

Philip Spanheimer, MD has been appointed Assistant Professor (secondary) in the Department of Genetics, effective March 1, 2024.

Dr. Spanheimer has a primary appointment in the Department of Surgery, Division of Surgical Oncology.  His clinical research focuses on surgical management of cancer and patient outcomes, with the goal of trying to understand the interaction and impact of patient factors and surgical management on recurrence, survival, and morbidity of treatment.  His lab has several projects and collaborations focused on the question of how tumors, or subpopulations within tumors, adapt to therapeutics and become resistant.  Dr. Spanheimer earned his MD from University of Iowa, and completed a Surgical Oncology Research Fellowship and General Surgery Residency at this institution, followed by a fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.  He joined UNC in 2019.  Welcome to Dr. Phil Spanheimer.
