Laura Milko, PhD (Assistant Professor, Genetics) was awarded a grant from the NC TraCS CTS Pilot Program.

The study aims to investigate the impact of previously developed educational resources, crafted in plain language and culturally sensitive, on public health genetic literacy and participation, while also exploring the influence of variations in content and delivery methods. Employing a mixed methods approach, Dr. Milko will collect survey data through community engagement events and gather qualitative perspectives from diverse individuals, seeking to understand the most effective ways individuals learn about genetic and genomic medicine concepts. Upon completion, this study aims to identify educational content and delivery strategies to facilitate effective communication about genetic testing and address the needs of those with lower genetic health literacy. By fostering trust and community collaboration, this approach endeavors to bridge disparities in research participation, thus promoting inclusive genomic insights for all.
