Malini Bommiasamy, PhD, Research Project Manager, Genetics

The Department is delighted to welcome Malini Bommiasamy, PhD, as a Research Project Manager.

Malini Bommiasamy obtained her BA from Augustana College in Rock Island, IL and her PhD from Loyola University in Chicago, IL. Her thesis work focused on exploring the unfolded protein response (UPR), a complex intracellular signaling pathway activated upon increased demands on the protein folding capacity of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), and its’ ability to modulate lipid biosynthesis, ER biogenesis and the capacity of the secretory pathway. Dr. Bommiasamy’s postdoctoral work under the mentoring of Dr. Jonathan Serody at UNC-Chapel Hill focused on Th17 plasticity during acute graft versus host disease (GvHD) as well as elucidating factors that contribute to skin GvHD. She transitioned to being the lab manager of the Serody Lab and managed lab operations and assisted lab members on a variety of GvHD and cancer research projects. Before transitioning to the Department of Genetics, Dr. Bommiasamy was a scientific project manager at the High Throughput Sequencing Facility (HTSF) and oversaw RNA sequencing of samples obtained from patients enrolled in NCI-sponsored cancer clinical trials. Dr. Bommiasamy will work with Dr. Sarah Schoenrock, the Associate Director of Research, and the research faculty to provide support for large team scientific grants within the department.
