HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system. It weakens the immune system by destroying important cells that fight disease and infection. There is currently no effective cure for HIV, but with the continued use of antiretroviral therapy (ART), HIV infection can be contained and managed as a chronic health condition. In most cases, individuals living with HIV who are on ART can live a long and healthy life. If HIV is not treated, it can lead to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome), a term that applies to the most advanced stages of HIV infection.
