Thyroid Eye Disease and Surgical Outcomes

Dr. Hwang is a board-certified ophthalmologist and an oculofacial plastic and reconstructive surgeon at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. He is fellowship-trained and a member of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS).

Dr. Hwang graduated from North Carolina State University as Valedictorian with a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering and a Minor in Psychology. He completed a two-year post-baccalaureate Cancer Research Training Award at the National Institutes of Health prior to receiving his medical degree at the University of North Carolina. Dr. Hwang also earned a Masters in Public Health degree from the top-ranked Gillings School of Global Public Health. He completed a transitional year internship at the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center before returning to the University of North Carolina for ophthalmology residency where he served as Chief Resident in his final year. After residency, Dr. Hwang completed a two-year ASOPRS fellowship at Mayo Clinic and the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Hwang specializes in adult and pediatric oculoplastic and reconstructive surgery including eyelid and eyebrow (blepharoplasty/brow lift) surgery, nasolacrimal (tear duct) surgery, orbital surgery, and Mohs reconstruction. He also offers non-surgical facial rejuvenation techniques including BOTOX® and fillers. Additionally, he has special interest in surgical and medical management of thyroid-related eye disease. Dr. Hwang believes in the importance of restoring both form and function and enhancing one’s natural beauty. Dr. Hwang takes a personalized approach when evaluating his patients to create treatment plans that are tailored to their surgery goals.

Outside of work, he enjoys sports, outdoor activities, traveling, music, and trying delicious new foods!
