The UNC Health Care System is a not-for-profit integrated health care system (established under North Carolina statute N.C.G.S. § 116-37) and is owned by the state of North Carolina. It is comprised of the UNC Hospitals and its provider network, the clinical programs of the UNC School of Medicine (UNCSOM), and several affiliate hospitals and hospital systems across the state of North Carolina.

The following entities are all considered part of the UNC Health Care System for HIPAA compliance purposes and are subject to the UNC Health Care System HIPAA policies:

  • UNC Hospitals
  • UNC Rex Healthcare
  • Chatham Hospital
  • High Point Regional
  • Caldwell Memorial
  • UNC Physicians Network
  • UNC Health Alliance
  • UNC Senior Alliance
  • UNC Faculty Physicians
  • UNC School of Medicine (all clinical components)
  • UNC Rockingham Health Care

The following entities are also part of the UNC Health Care System, but are only subject to those UNC Health Care System HIPAA policies and HIPAA privacy program elements that they have formally adopted:

  • Johnston Health
  • Pardee Hospital
  • Wayne Memorial Hospital
  • UNC Lenoir Health Care
  • Nash Health Care Systems
