Virkud Promoted to Associate Professor of Pediatrics

Yamini Virkud, MD, MPH was promoted to Associate Professor of Pediatrics effective November 1, 2023. Dr. Virkud has been a faculty member in Pediatrics since 2021. Dr. Virkud received her medical degree from Washington University in 2008. Dr. Virkud completed her pediatric residency at St. Louis Children’s Hospital in 2011 and clinical and research fellowships were completed at Duke University in 2014. Before joining us at UNC Children’s, Dr. Virkud was an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and at Massachusetts General Hospital for Children.

Burbank Promoted to Associate Professor of Pediatrics

Allison Burbank, MD was promoted to Associate Professor of Pediatrics effective November 1, 2023. Dr. Burbank has been a faculty member in Pediatrics since 2017. Dr. Burbank received her medical degree from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in May 2010 and remained in Little Rock, AR to complete her Pediatric Residency in June 2014. She completed her Allergy-Immunology Fellowship Postdoctoral Training at with us at UNC Chapel Hill.

Weinberg Promoted to Associate Professor of Pediatrics

Steven Weinberg, MD was promoted to Associate Professor of Pediatrics effective October 1, 2023. Dr. Weinberg has been a faculty member in Pediatrics since 2019. Dr. Weinberg serves as a Pediatric hospitalist providing direct patient care to inpatient pediatric patients on the PMB, Pediatric BMT and Newborn nursery services as well as coverage of pediatric admissions and transfers including supervision of residents.

Mvalo Promoted to Associate Professor of Pediatrics

Tisu Mvalo, MD was promoted to Associate Professor of Pediatrics effective June 1, 2023. Dr. Mvalo has been a faculty member in Pediatrics since 2016. Dr. Mvalo practices at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe, Malawi. He also provides on-the-ground mentorship for the rotating learners and is the PI for several ongoing research studies at UNC Project Malawi.

Vece Promoted to Professor of Pediatrics

Timothy Vece, MD was promoted to Professor of Pediatrics effective May 1, 2023. Dr. Vece has been a faculty member in Pediatric Pulmonology since 2016. Dr. Vece is the Medical Director, North Carolina Children’s Airway Center and part of the Rare and Genetic Lung Disease Program.

Trembath Promoted to Professor of Pediatrics

Andrea Trembath, MD, MPH was promoted to Professor of Pediatrics effective May 1, 2023. Dr. Trembath has been a faculty member in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine since 2017. Dr. Trembath is the Co-Medical Director for Children’s AirCare, primarily focusing on the care and transport of neonates.

Li Promoted to Professor of Pediatrics

Chengwen Li, PhD was promoted to Professor of Pediatrics effective May 1, 2023. Dr. Li has been a faculty member in Pediatrics since 2010. Dr. Li is member of the Gene Therapy Center and is an internationally recognized expert in adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors for gene therapy.

Willis Promoted to Associate Professor of Pediatrics

Zachary Willis, MD, MPH was promoted to Associate Professor of Pediatrics effective May 1, 2023. Dr. Willis has been a faculty member in Pediatrics since 2016. Dr. Willis is a specialist in pediatric infectious disease with particular interest in studying antibacterial resistance and is the Director of the Pediatric Antimicrobial Stewardship Program.

Sutton Promoted to Professor of Pediatrics

Ashley Sutton, MD was promoted to Professor of Pediatrics effective April 1, 2023. Dr. Sutton has been a faculty member in Pediatrics since 2012. Dr. Sutton is a Pediatric Hospitalist and Director of Quality, Patient Safety and Flow for the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine.

Fuchs Promoted to Associate Professor of Pediatrics

Jennifer Fuchs, MD was promoted to Associate Professor of Pediatrics effective April 1, 2023. Dr. Fuchs has been a faculty member in Pediatrics since 2019. Dr. Fuchs is a Pediatric Hospitalist and the Program Director for the Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship.
