Gentzsch Promoted to Professor of Pediatrics
Martina Gentzsch, PhD was promoted to Professor of Pediatrics effective February 1, 2026. Dr. Gentzsch’s research focuses on uncovering potential targets for therapy of chronic lung diseases

Petersen Promoted to Professor
Maureen Petersen, MD, Division of Allergy-Immunology, was promoted to Professor of Pediatrics effective February 1, 2026. Dr. Petersen has been a faculty member at UNC since 2024, following her career in the US Army.

Herrera Promoted to Associate Professor of Pediatrics
Adriana Herrera, MD, MPH was promoted to Associate Professor of Pediatrics effective December 1, 2025. Dr. Herrera has been faculty in the division of Hospital Pediatrics since 2021. Congratulations!

Smith Promoted to Associate Professor of Pediatrics
Melissa Smith, MD was promoted to Associate Professor of Pediatrics effective December 1, 2025. Dr. Smith has been a faculty member in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine since 2018. Congratulations!

de Jong Promoted to Professor of Pediatrics
Neal deJong, MD, MPH was promoted to Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of General Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, effective October 1, 2025. Dr. deJong has been a faculty member in Pediatrics since July 2015. Dr. de Jong earned his medical degree and remained to completed his pediatric residency at Johns Hopkins University. A Primary Care Research fellowship was completed at UNC Chapel Hill. His research focuses on the care these children and families receive as they balance between their primary care and specialty care physicians, such as effective long-term plans of care for children with chronic conditions.
