Research Focus

Cedric Wolber is studying the polarity of Ca²⁺ signaling in human goblet cells.  Mucin secretory granules are exocytosed across the cells' apical membranes and is strictly Ca²⁺ dependent.  The Ca²⁺ responsible for exocytosis, per se, does not appear to cross the apical membrane, but is released from IP3-dependent pools in the ER.  The question immediately at hand is whether Ca²⁺ necessary for re-charging the ER Ca²⁺ stores enters the cell via the apical or basolateral membranes.
