1. Expose medical students to a career in Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery.

Learning Activities:

Weekly scheduled conferences and rounds

Rounds, clinics and ORs each day

Expected hours: 6:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. (approx.)

Presentation of patients at rounds

No on-call requirements

STUDENTS: These rotations are all available through the Surgery Clerkship

Evaluation: All 2-week career exploration electives are pass fail. Attendance and participation are required to pass. A presentation may be assigned.

 

 Course Title:  OTOL 455 Elective in Carniofacial Care

Faculty: Amelia F. Drake, MD, John VanAalst, MD, Brent Golden, DDS, MD

Prerequisites: 2.5 years of medical school

Periods Offered: All EXCEPT July, August and April (Block 1, 2, 10)

Learning Objectives:

This course would increase the student’s knowledge about the multidisciplinary approach to craniofacial care. Part of the experience would be to learn initial management of cleft and craniofacial disorders. The student would understand the realm of treatment options and become involved in patient education, including prevention of clefting and associated dental disease, psychological and speech disorders. The student’s knowledge of the interface of genetic risk and phenotypic expression of some diseases would also be enhanced.

Learning Activities:

1) Become involved in education of patients in craniofacial condition through handouts, websites, and literature
2) Actively present patients in the weekly conference
3) No on call requirements

Student may choose to participate in extra-credit educational opportunities, such as at local health fairs

Evaluation:

1) Presentations at case conference
2) Participation in patient care
3) Involvement in patient education
