Residency Training in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
The Division of Plastic Surgery’s Residency Training Program at the University of North Carolina is designed to provide residents with comprehensive training in all aspects of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. It is a three-year program with an emphasis on resident involvement in preoperative, operative and postoperative patient management. The program is distinguished by the personal attention of the entire faculty to the educational progress of each of the residents and adheres to the standards of practice set forth by the North Carolina Medical Board. Notable surgeons in both plastic and general surgery who are a part of the program's history include Erle Peacock, Carl Hartrampf, Leonard Furlow, PG Arnold and Paul Weeks. With such a strong history, legacy and commitment to excellence, it is easy to understand why the program consistently ranks high with potential candidates.
The program utilizes The University of North Carolina Health Care System and the Carolinas Medical Center to maximize the clinical material to which each resident is exposed. The primary teaching faculty for the training program is centered at The University of North Carolina. Plastic Surgery faculty in Chapel Hill includes C. Scott Hultman, MD, Lynn A. Damitz, MD, John A. van Aalst, MD, Clara N. Lee, MD, Eric Halvorson, MD, Kamil Erfanian, MD, and Marion E. Couch, MD, PhD. In addition, faculty, staff, and resources of the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center and the UNC Craniofacial Center are actively utilized for the residents’ educational experience. Teaching at the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina is provided by clinical faculty members William F. Mullis, MD, William E. Jacobs, MD, Kevin L. Smith, MD, Paul A. Watterson, MD, Felmont F. Eaves, III, MD, Stephen Finical, MD, Stanley B. Getz, MD, Jean-Francois Lefaivre, MD, and Ernest Castellano, PA-C. The “Charlotte” rotation also provides the residents with a private practice experience at Charlotte Plastic Surgery, the largest plastic surgery group in the country. The diverse faculty assures that the residents are exposed to a variety of approaches to clinical problems and surgical methods.
