Each year, the first full week of fall is marked as Falls Prevention Awareness Week. This year, that week is September 22-26, 2025. However, for 2025, the NC Falls Prevention Coalition will celebrate in a new way with 2025 Falls Prevention Awareness Month with STEPtember. Throughout this month, events hosted by local senior centers and councils for aging will raise awareness about falls.

Specifically, STEPtember is a month-long walking challenge in which seniors are asked to count their steps. However it isn’t a competition. The goal is encouraging seniors to see the importance of being motion today for preventing future falls.

In addition to step counting, there are other Falls Prevention Awareness events happening throughout North Carolina. One key event is the NC Falls Prevention Conference on September 19 at the MAHEC Education Building in Asheville. This event will address both hi- and lo-tech approaches to falls prevention. Additionally experts from Wake Forest Baptist Health, Atrium Health, Winston-Salem State University, and Stewart Physical Therapy will gather at the Intergenerational Center for Arts & Wellness in Winston-Salem on September 24 for the second Annual Piedmont Area Falls-Free Expo.
